FinCon — Is it worth it for real estate content creators?

I am a real estate investor that decided to venture out in the covid world to attend the 2021 FinCon held in Austin, TX.

Bought my ticket weeks before the event on a whim!

I had heard about FinCon in 2019 but was debating whether it was worth my time and money to go.

The short answer is I think it was worth it.

However, these are 10 takeaways from my first experience at FinCon — I hope they can help you if you plan to go:

  1. FinCon is a great conference for content creators in the personal finance space — bloggers, you tubers, podcasters, and coaches. The event provides opportunities to collaborate on creating content or learn strategies that can potentially help you better serve your audience.
  2. Many of the content creators were primarily focused on helping people at the beginner stage of their journey — getting out of debt primarily. I would like to meet in the future more creators that are helping people who are a bit further along in their wealth-building journey.
  3. Connecting takes courage — so don’t give up. The first day I went to meet the vendors and brands I didn’t really understand how to connect with them. So I started with brands that I knew and shared what I did and learned more about what they were seeking to accomplish at the event. This helped me to see if there were opportunities to collaborate and work together. I always asked for recommendations of brands they would suggest I speak with now that they knew what I did. That question enabled me to meet a company that I later interviewed on my podcast.
  4. Ask the people you meet what brings them to the conference and what are they looking for in their businesses. This helps you to learn about them and even if they are not a good match for you specifically you can connect them with someone that is.
  5. Check out all the booths and learn about each vendor. I believe that you can do this in advance. However, I did not. Instead, I visited each of the booths and learned a lot about companies that I had never heard of before that were doing amazing things!
  6. Host a meet-up on your area of focus. I hosted a real estate meet-up the day before the event. It was a great way to meet some people before the event started. I would recommend promoting it early or host an event during the FinCon event and get it on the FinCon agenda. This will enable more people to see it and hence attend!
  7. Check out presentations outside of what you typically would listen to. This is the time to be curious. I checked out a presentation on memberships and how one content creator was able to successfully implement them into their business. It gave me great ideas of things I could do in my own business.
  8. Sign up to podcast or record video live! I highly recommend doing this. First, it is a great practice to keep your interview skills growing. Secondly, raw content for your brand and platform. Thirdly — each time I was in the area it resulted in my meeting more people and even being asked to be interviewed on other people’s podcast or video recordings. You are simply in good company.

Will I go next year?

Yes!

FinCon was awesome! For real estate content creators, it is an awesome way to meet people who were not in the immediate real estate investing space but are already thinking about investing and building wealth. The conversations are easy and the collaboration opportunities are there!
